Monday, 1/20 NO SCHOOL – MLK Day
Emily and I would like to thank you for your generosity and warm wishes this holiday season. I trust you made some happy memories over the break.
Our first week back at school has been a roar of activity and noise. The kids definitely have a lot of energy (read noise) and it has been challenging trying to move through our transitions and lessons. We had a class discussion about this, and maybe you would like to ask your student what it means to make good choices, be a peacemaker, and to have compassion for others.
In cultural lessons we discussed the medieval castle as a place of refuge, defense, and government. We learned about the stained glass artwork found in many of the beautiful cathedrals of Europe and tried to make our own on paper. Our planned discussion on alchemy and the real advances that resulted from the efforts of those pursuing it will need to be put off due to other pressing classroom discussions stated above.
We will attempt to learn how political boundaries change over time by looking at modern vs medieval alliances and national borders. We will also look at the three largest kingdoms of the living world: fungi, plant, and animal. I plan on discussing medieval tools, weapons, and architecture and compare them to our modern equivalents. Finally, on Friday we will discuss Martin Luther King and his legacy.
