Important News from Rm. 17 Eric and Ms. Sarah 12-11-08

This week in the classroom:

The highlight of this week was definitely the dissection of the earthworm. The look of awe on the faces of the children as they explored the inner organs of the worm and identified the pharynx, the crop, the gizzard, the five hearts and the intestine was unforgettable.

All second and third years had a lesson on editing and final draft. We also spoke briefly about visual aids. Rough drafts should be edited by the student and then by another person which could be a friend or an adult. Then they are to write their final drafts in their very best handwriting, making all corrections. The editing marks introduced include: triple underline for a letter that should be capitalized, s-p written above a circled word to identify spelling errors, a punctuation mark in a circle to signify the need for punctuation and a line drawn through a capital to show that it should be lower case.

See presentation schedule for time and day of your student’s presentation. Parents are welcome to attend.

Tuesday, 12/16 - 2:10 Sevrin; 2:15 Kalysa; 2:20 Emily; 2:30 Talia; 2:35 Cheyenne. Wednesday, 12/17 - 2:20 Aidan; 2:25 Owen; 2:30 Meherbaan; 2:35 Ronan. Thursday, 12/18 - 2:10 Molly; 2:15 Bella; 2:20 Azraia; 2:25 Lydia; 2:30 Kian; 2:35 Hana. ** Ethan will be out of town on these three days so he will present on Monday, December 15th at 12:45.

Next week in the classroom:

This will be a bit of an odd week as we are preparing for two weeks off. We will be doing some winter time activities and will be discussing many of the winter holidays celebrated around the world including, but not limited to, Chanukah, Christmas, and Winter Solstice. We will be working on some winter crafts and of course will be listening to the 2nd and 3rd years’ presentations.

Eric and Ms. Sarah

In the words of Maria Montessori – “By offering the child the story of the universe, we give him something a thousand times more infinite and mysterious to reconstruct with his imagination, a drama no fable can reveal.”
